Five people have gone missing aboard a tourist submarine on a deep dive to see the wreckage of the Titanic ship, by the island of Newfoundland in Canada. A search is now underway.

The submarine disappeared about one hour and 45 minutes into its dive on Sunday afternoon, having lost contact with the underwater tourism company OceanGate which organised the trip.

On this occasion, the five tourists paid close to €230,000 for an eight-day trip to visit the wreckage of the infamous Titanic ship in the north of the Atlantic Ocean.

The company chose to put them on board the Titan, a deep-diving submarine but had lost contact with them. The vessel possesses a 96-hour oxygen supply that started at roughly 06:00 on Sunday, according to The Guardian.

Rear Admiral John Mauger of the US Coast Guard told a press conference on Monday that "there is somewhere between 70 and the full 96 hours available" to find the missing ship.

He also confirmed that two aircraft and a submarine and sonar buoys were involved in the search, before adding though that the area in which the search is taking place was "remote," further complicating matters.

At the time of the writing, the growing belief is that the vessel either suffered a power failure or came into contact with one of the many pieces of debris left by the original Titanic’s ship sinking.
