Human rights commissioners from Russia and Ukraine met on Monday in Belarus following the largest prisoner swap between the two countries in months, Russia's ombudsperson reported on her Telegram channel on Tuesday.
“Yesterday, I had a meeting with the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Ukrainian parliament ... Dmitry Lubinets," Tatiana Moskalkova, the Russian Commissioner for Human Rights, reported. “We discussed prisoners of war from both sides, prospects for further humanitarian contacts, the return of civilians, and the reunification of families,” she added.
The meeting was also reported by Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmitry Lubinets.
On Monday, the two countries each exchanged 150 military personnel who had been captured on both sides of the front lines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said later that 189 Ukrainians had returned home.
The exchange was facilitated by the United Arab Emirates.
Moscow and Kyiv have carried out almost 60 prisoner exchanges since the war began on 24 February 2022.
