US Vice President JD Vance announced on Tuesday that he will join his wife, Usha, on her scheduled visit to Greenland, the Danish autonomous territory openly coveted by Donald Trump.

"There was so much excitement around Usha's visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided that I didn't want her to have all that fun by herself, and so I'm going to join her," Vance said in a video posted on the platform X.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had already stated that the visit by Usha Vance’s group - which is also scheduled to include National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright - constituted “unacceptable pressure” on Denmark and Greenland.

Trip to dogsled race cancelled

Vance, known for his particularly tough stances on foreign policy, especially regarding the United States' European allies, will visit the US Space Force base in Pituffik.

The White House had said earlier that Usha Vance would arrive in Greenland on Thursday and return on Saturday, and that she would visit "historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland's national dogsled race."

However, it was later announced that the Vances would travel on Friday to Greenland to receive a briefing on Arctic issues, visit the base, and meet with U.S. service members, and that the trip to the dogsled race was cancelled.

Focus on security concerns

JD Vance indicated that, once in Greenland, he would also address “security concerns” related to the vast Arctic island.

"A lot of other countries have threatened Greenland, have threatened to use its territories and its waterways, to threaten the United States," the US Vice President said, echoing Donald Trump’s arguments.

According to Trump, annexing Greenland would address a national security imperative for the United States and possibly for the world. In addition to Greenland, he has also mentioned annexing Canada and taking control of the Panama Canal.
