Italian anti-terrorist police announced on Friday the arrest of a Tunisian citizen suspected of links to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The man, a resident of the Calabrian town of Cosenza, was wanted by Tunisian authorities for involvement in terrorist activities, Italian police said in a statement.
The suspect intended to carry out a terrorist action in Italy in the near future, according to the Italian police.
He played an organisational role and identified with Salafism, an ultraconservative Sunni Islamic movement aiming to establish a society governed by Islamic law.
Police said their surveillance had uncovered the existence and activities of a criminal structure aiming to commit terrorist acts, and which engaged in proselytism, indoctrination, and military-style training.
A judicial investigation they conducted revealed that the suspect possessed videos of attacks and warfare, jihadist propaganda, and documents on how to make explosives and weapons, the police stated.
