Five men were sentenced on Tuesday by an Amsterdam court for acts of violence and complicity in violence against Israeli football supporters in November.
The Amsterdam public prosecutor found the men guilty of various offences, ranging from kicking Maccabi Tel-Aviv supporters in the street to inciting violence in online chat groups.
The violence sparked outrage amongst Dutch authorities and deemed anti-Semitic by many Western governments.
The court issued sentences of six months, ten weeks, and one month in prison, along with a sentence of 100 hours of community service.
Sefa Ö, 32, received the heaviest sentence for chasing, pushing, and hitting several Israeli supporters, including one individual who was already on the ground unconscious, as shown in footage presented at the hearing.
The judge stated that typically, those convicted of such crimes are sentenced to community service.
“But the court believes that given the severity of the offence and the context in which it was committed, a prison sentence is the only appropriate punishment.”
On the night of 7-8 November, supporters of the Israeli club were chased and beaten in the streets of Amsterdam following a football match against the local team Ajax. Five people were briefly hospitalised, and several dozen reported injuries.
