Some Syrian refugees in Germany will have to return home

Some Syrian refugees in Germany may have to return to their home country as the situation there has stabilised, according to a statement by German Interior Minister on Sunday.

“Our law mandates the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) to review and revoke protection statuses if individuals no longer need them because the situation in Syria has stabilised,” Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, said.

The minister said that this measure would apply to people who have no other right to stay in Germany, such as for work or education.

“Those who are well integrated, have employment, have learned German, and found a new home here should be allowed to stay in Germany,” she emphasised.

Those wishing to return home must be supported, while criminals and Islamists need to be deported as quickly as possible, the minister stressed.

Approximately 975,000 Syrians currently live in Germany, according to the Interior Ministry figures. Most of them arrived after 2015 due to the Syrian civil war.

More than 300,000 of them benefit from subsidiary protection status, granted not for individual persecution, but because of the civil war in their home country.
