NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to mend his relationship with former US President Donald Trump.
Speaking on the BBC on Saturday, Rutte mentioned that the request comes a day after an unprecedented confrontation at the White House between Zelenskyy, Trump, and Trump’s Vice President J.D. Vance.
“I told President Zelenskyy, ‘Dear Volodymyr, I think you need to find a way to restore your relationship with Donald Trump and the US administration,’” Rutte said. “We need to stay united – the United States, Ukraine, and Europe – to provide Ukraine with lasting peace.”
Zelenskyy was in Washington on Friday to sign an agreement promising minerals from Ukraine to the US. However, before the agreement was signed, the meeting at the White House devolved into a public quarrel between Zelenskyy and the duo of Trump and Vance.
By Saturday afternoon, the Ukrainian President had arrived in the United Kingdom. On Sunday, he is scheduled to attend a European summit on Ukraine, with Rutte also in attendance.
