American billionaire Jeff Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sánchez will marry in Venice in the coming weeks, confirmed the city’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, on Sunday.

Approximately 200 guests are expected to attend.

While the couple has not officially commented, sources suggest the ceremony will take place from 24 to 26 June.

Rumours have circulated about five hotel reservations, a fleet of water taxis, and an anchorage for Bezos’ mega-yacht.

On Saturday, Venice’s city hall issued a statement refuting claims that Bezos intends to privatise large parts of the city, calling them “fake news.”

Preparations for the celebration are in full swing, confirmed the mayor on Sunday.

The authorities assert that Venice is fully prepared to host the wedding and often accommodates even larger international events.

“Anyone who loves Venice is always welcome,” stated Mayor Brugnaro. He added that the municipal administration has worked closely with organisers to ensure the event respects the city’s fragility and uniqueness.

Venice, now home to fewer than 50,000 residents, faces a massive influx of tourists during the summer.

The recent introduction of an entrance fee has not changed this situation. Visitors who stay for just one day can be charged up to €10, while hotel guests already paying a stay tax are exempt.
