Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday assured the residents of Greenland of her support in the face of the repeatedly expressed interest of Donald Trump and the US government in acquiring the Danish territory.

Last week, Trump’s Vice President JD Vance visited the Arctic Island, and claimed that the Danes were not protecting it well enough.

Frederiksen said regardless of future discussions about the relationship between Denmark and Greenland, unity is essential in facing US pressure on issues of sovereignty, borders, and the future.

Greenland was a Danish colony until it became an integral part of Denmark in 1953. In 1979, it gained autonomy, which was expanded in 2009.

All political parties in Greenland seek eventual full independence, although opinions differ on the timeline, yet they unanimously oppose joining the United States.

Earlier this year, a poll showed that 85% of the population rejected the idea of becoming part of the US.

The Danish Prime Minister’s visit will last until Friday.
