The funeral of Pope Francis will take place on Saturday at St. Peter’s Square in Rome, the Vatican announced on Tuesday.
The Argentinian pope passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
Pope Francis’s body will be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday at 9 am, where mourners will have the opportunity to pay their respects.
Currently, the Pope is lying in state in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta, where he lived for the past twelve years. He never moved into the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.
On Tuesday morning, the Vatican released the first images of Pope Francis lying in repose.
The Pope wished to be interred in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Though most popes are usually laid to rest in St. Peter’s Basilica, Santa Maria Maggiore already has the graves of seven popes, with the last being Clement IX in 1669.
Among the attendees at the funeral are expected to be Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron, who have both confirmed their presence.
