Several government websites were targeted by a cyberattack on Monday morning.

According to the Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium (CCB), the attack originated from the pro-Russian hacker collective NoName057.

This was a DDoS attack that overwhelms targeted servers with an astronomical number of requests, ultimately paralysing them.

"The collective announces its attacks in advance on its website," said CCB spokesperson Katrien Eggers. "We have contacted the victims so they can implement anti-DDoS measures."

The Liège Province confirmed it was among the targets, as did Limburg, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant, and Walloon Brabant. The City of Antwerp and the Chamber of Representatives also reported being affected.

Most of the impacted sites were restored by early afternoon, but those of Hainaut Province and the Walloon Region remain unavailable.

According to the CCB, further disruptions are expected in the coming hours "depending on the intensity of the attack and the protective measures taken."
