Microsoft founder Bill Gates, one of the wealthiest people in the world, recently donated around $50 million (£46.3 million) to a non-profit organisation supporting Democrat Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
Gates told the US daily that he supports candidates committed to improving healthcare, reducing poverty, and combating climate change in the US and worldwide.
He mentioned that he has a history of collaborating with leaders from across the political spectrum, but believes this election is uniquely significant for Americans and the most vulnerable people globally.
Sources close to Gates revealed that he has expressed concern to friends and acquaintances about a second term for Republican Donald Trump, fearing cuts to family planning and global health programmes if Trump is re-elected.
Gates donated his millions to Future Forward USA Action, an organisation that does not disclose its donors.
The New York Times also reported that billionaire Mike Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, is considering a substantial donation to the same pro-Harris group.
