Belgium's beloved jovial old man who brings presents to well-behaved children has confirmed when he will first be arriving in the country this year. His joyous entry is attended by hundreds of children every year.

Every year on 6 December, children across Belgium wake up to presents, as well as speculoos, chocolate figures and coins, marzipan and tangerines, provided they have been good throughout the year. These are all brought by a man in red – Sinterklaas (or "de Sint") in Flemish and Saint Nicholas in French – who was the inspiration for Santa Claus.

However, Sinterklaas arrives in Belgium much earlier than on 6 December. He always comes to the country via Antwerp, where festivities are organised to mark the special occasion. This year, his entry is scheduled for Saturday 16 November.

At around 14:00, the saintly man will moor his steamer along the Scheldt quays, near the pontoon on Steenplein. Upon disembarking, he will be welcomed by Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) and hoards of excited children, before starting a procession through the centre to the Grote Markt.

Here, he will hold his traditional speech from the balcony of the town hall, where the long-awaited announcement follows as to whether or not there were any naughty children. The whole event can be followed live on VRT 1, Ketnet and VRT MAX for families unable to make it to Antwerp.

Brussels-based Sint events

Children in Brussels will have to wait a little longer to see their beloved Sint. He will be making an appearance on Grand Place the weekend before 6 December.

De Sint will also be at the Porte de Hal museum on Sunday 1 December, where he will open the doors to his castle for all the well-behaved youngsters. Little visitors get to sit on his throne in front of the big fireplace before receiving goodies to take home.

The 'Sinterkluis' will also be returning to Brussels-Central Station. This striking red parcel locker allows children to send their letters or drawings to Sinterklaas and immediately get a letter in reply and a treat from Sinterklaas.

On 6 December, Manneken Pis will be dressed as Sinterklaas all day, while several festive activities are usually on the agenda.
