Farmers will block Belgium's borders on Wednesday 4 December to protest against the free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries, the Federation of Young Farmers (FJA) announced on Friday.

The agreement is set to remove tariffs on most products traded between the EU and Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). EU farmers have previously protested against the unfair competition to which the deal subjects them, particularly in terms of production costs.

The FJA's action is planned just a day ahead of a significant summit on the agreement, which will take place on 5 and 6 December in Uruguay. The summit may be a crucial moment before a final decision is made at the European Council meeting on 19 and 20 December in Brussels, the FJA highlighted.

More details about the planned actions will be revealed as the date approaches, the farmers federation stated.
