The Belgian Football Union announced the end of Domenico Tedesco's position as manager of the Belgian national football team on Friday.
"Following a detailed evaluation, the sporting committee of the Belgian FA decided today to end the collaboration with national coach Domenico Tedesco," said the statement from the Royal Belgian Football Union (URBSFA). "The search for his successor is underway."
Tedesco (39) was appointed manager in February 2023, succeeding Roberto Martinez but he did not pass the evaluation conducted by Vincent Mannaert, the new sporting director of the Belgian Football Union.
"By relying on a rejuvenated team, he conducted a solid qualifying campaign for the Euro. However, during the Euro, the Red Devils did not meet expectations, as was the case in the subsequent Nations League," the federation justified the decision, while also thanking Tedesco's entire staff.
In the statement, Tedesco said he was proud of his work with the Red Devils. "We achieved great things together. Sadly, this wonderful journey ends today," he said.
The Italo-German coach ends his tenure with a record of 12 wins, 6 draws, and 6 losses. Notably, all six defeats occurred in the last 10 matches played last year.
His successor will need to reignite the team’s spirit ahead of the playoffs to stay in League A of the Nations League against Ukraine next March and, most importantly, the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers three months later.
"This team is just at the beginning of its development and will continue to impress in the coming years. From the bottom of my heart, I wish the best to the players, the amazing staff at the federation, and the fans," Tedesco concluded.
