Club Brugge will face Aston Villa in the Champions League round of 16 following the draw held on Friday afternoon in Nyon, Switzerland.
The first game will be played on March 4 or 5 at Jan Breydel Stadium, with the return leg at Villa Park a week later.
The Belgian champions reached the last sixteen by defeating Atalanta in the play-off round. Aston Villa, featuring Belgian internationals Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana, automatically qualified after finishing eighth in the league phase.
Club Brugge and Aston Villa already met in the league phase, with Club Brugge winning 1-0 in early November, thanks to a penalty by Hans Vanaken following a defensive error by Tyrone Mings.
During the winter transfer window, Aston Villa, coached by Unai Emery, signed Marcus Rashford from Manchester United, Marco Asensio from PSG, and Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, but saw Jhon Duran depart to Al-Nassr for €77 million.
Should Club Brugge eliminate Aston Villa, they will face the winner of the PSG vs Liverpool clash in the quarter-finals.
Apart from Aston Villa, Club Brugge could have faced Lille in the draw. Lille will play against Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16.
Titleholders Real Madrid, featuring Thibaut Courtois, will play Atletico Madrid in a city derby. Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich will meet Bayer Leverkusen, while Leandro Trossard’s Arsenal will face PSV Eindhoven. Feyenoord will play against Inter Milan, and Barcelona will face Benfica for a place in the quarter-finals.
