The local police in Lier have arrested two young men, aged 18 and 19, suspected of committing computer fraud.

The suspects allegedly impersonated Cardstop employees—a service for blocking payment cards—to convince victims to hand over their bank cards.

The fraudsters called victims, warning them that their bank cards urgently needed blocking, and suggested they hand over the cards in person. They would then visit the victims’ homes to collect the cards, likely intending to withdraw money.

An alert woman became suspicious and contacted the police, who initiated an investigation. The police arrived at the woman’s home when the fake Cardstop employees showed up, and arrested the suspects on the spot.

It quickly emerged that the suspects had targeted other victims before. The investigation is ongoing.

Lier police stress that legitimate bank employees or Cardstop personnel will never ask to collect bank cards in person. Anyone receiving such a request should immediately notify the police.
