On Thursday afternoon, a district police officer was stabbed by a 12-year-old boy in the municipality of Peer, in the Limburg province.

The stabbing occurred around 15:30 on the Collegelaan where the officer was directing traffic near the Agnetencollege school, according to reports in Het Belang van Limburg.

The officer got into an argument with a pupil and was then reportedly stabbed several times in the back and leg by that pupil. The man was taken to the hospital. His life is not in danger, but does have to stay overnight for observation, reports the local newspaper.

The suspect - a 12-year-old boy - was arrested, along with his brother and mother, Peer mayor Steven Matheï confirmed to Het Laatste Nieuws.

Both the Lommel police (from a neighbouring zone) and the public prosecutor's office have been called in to investigate what happened.
