The Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA) decided at a meeting of its governing council on Saturday to postpone its presidential elections until early 2025, Belga News Agency reports.

Current president Bart De Wever – who is also Mayor of Antwerp – will remain at the head of the Flemish pro-independence party until then. The N-VA presidential elections were to have been held in late 2023 and early 2024.

Meanwhile, member of the Federal Parliament Valérie Peel (the N-VA’s current vice-president) has announced her retirement from politics after the 2024 elections. Peel cited personal reasons and said on Saturday that she would step down from the role of vice president in September.

The N-VA will once again need to start looking for a deputy, as Peel had only held the position for a few months. In late March, her predecessor Lorin Parys gave up the vice-presidency to become CEO of the football Pro League.
