Hanover has become one of the first cities in Germany to take measures to save energy as a result of the Russian gas crisis.

From now on, it will only be possible to take a cold shower in government buildings, swimming pools and sports centres, German media reported on Thursday.

Fountains in the city are also turned off to save energy. Large buildings such as the town hall and museums are no longer lit at night. Heating in public buildings is limited to 20 degrees.

According to Mayor Belit Onay, the aim of the measures is to cut the city’s energy consumption by 15 percent.
