Former Argentine President Alberto Fernández is set to go on trial for abusing and threatening his ex-wife, Fabiola Yáñez, following a ruling by the Argentine judiciary on Tuesday.

The former First Lady and ex-journalist filed a complaint against Fernández, alleging that “abuse, harassment, contempt, aggression, and blows” were constants in their relationship.

The prosecutor claims Fernández inflicted physical and psychological abuse on Yáñez, citing photos showing her covered in bruises.

The 66-year-old Fernández has always denied the allegations. He appealed against the trial in February, but two federal appeal court judges have now ruled that gender-based violence was indeed involved. Fernández faces up to 18 years in prison if convicted.

Yáñez now resides in Spain with the son she shares with Fernández. The couple separated after Fernández’s presidential term ended in December 2023.
