The Belgian Grand Prix will be on the Formula One world championship calendar in 2023 after all, the competition organised in light of rumours that its presence was under threat.
Next year, the race on the legendary Spa-Francorchamps racing track, which is taking place on Sunday 28 August, the Belgian Grand Prix will be included on the calendar of the world's most prestigious motor racing competition, the organisation announced on Twitter shortly ahead of the start of the first race.
The Belgian Grand Prix's contract with Formula One, which runs F1 and organises the global competition, was due to expire at the end of the year and the event's presence on the 2023 calendar was under threat, as F1 wanted to implement a type of rotational system that would allow everyone to be part of the calendar, however, its future has now been secured.
"Formula One can confirm that the Belgian Grand Prix will be on the 2023 calendar, following an agreement to extend our partnership. Further details on the 2023 calendar will be announced in due course," Formula One said in a statement.
"This is great news for everyone who loves Formula One," Formula One president Stefano Domenicali told RTBF. "We have seen the outstanding work of the promoters and we have had a fantastic response from the public."
Spa-Francorchamps first appeared on the F1 calendar in the inaugural season in 1950. Sunday's race is the 67th Belgian F1 Grand Prix and the 55th to be held at Spa-Francorchamps.
