François De Smet announced on Friday evening in an interview with Le Soir daily that he will be seeking re-election as head of DéFI at the party's presidential election, to be held on 4 December.
Candidatures for the election opened on Friday and will close on 30 September.
Highlighting the importance of the polls, De Smet stressed that "according to the choices we make during the next 10 years, it's the entire story of the next 30, 40, 50 years that will be determined."
"Very modestly, I think Défi, because of the values we hold, has a role to play in this story and I think I can help," he added.
De Smet wants to make Défi the first choice of voters, not the second, he said. If elected, he would serve a four-year term after leading the party for three years, having succeeded Olivier Mangain in 2019.
