Disruptions are expected for Belgium's railway company SNCB next Wednesday 9 November due to the unions' general day of action and strikes, the company confirmed on Wednesday.

At the railway, strike actions typically start as early as the evening before at 22:00, meaning that disruptions are expected from Tuesday evening. They will most likely last 24 hours, during which the union actions will criticise the Federal Government a weak response to provide measures to bolster the purchasing power of its staff.

The socialist (ABVV/FGTB), Christian (ACV/CSC) and liberal (ACLVB/CGSLB) trade unions are organising a general day of "inter-professional" actions and strikes on 9 November, allowing companies to choose whether to strike or not.

The ACOD railway union has submitted a strike notice: "This is an inter-professional strike, and so we are participating," union president Ludo Sempels said. Actions and strikes are also expected in other sectors.

More clarity on the minimum services of the railway is expected early next week.
