Electricity from renewable sources broke records again in 2022, against the background of a gradual increase in the installed capacity of onshore wind power (+14%) and solar energy (+35%), according to figures published on Friday by electricity system operator Elia.
Offshore wind production remained stable, and no increase in the production capacity of offshore wind farms is planned before 2027-2028.
Wind and photovoltaic generation reached 17.4 TWh (terawatt hours), compared to 15.2 TWh in 2021.
Offshore wind accounted for 7.5% of the electricity generation mix last year (up from 7.3% in 2021). Onshore wind contributed 5% (4.3% in 2021) and solar power 7.3% (5.1% in 2021).
Together, these renewable energy sources accounted for 19.8% of the electricity mix, up from 16.7% in 2021.
Last year, the leading source of electricity in Belgium was nuclear energy. Its availability was still high despite the definitive closure of the Doel 3 plant at the end of September 2022. Nuclear energy's share of the electricity mix was 47.3%, down from 52.2% in 2021.
Finally, gas accounted for 26.9%, up from 24.7% in 2021.
