Belgium might have seen its first “oak” wedding anniversary after a man and wife celebrated 80 years since their marriage, the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO) reported on Monday.
The happy couple Edward Cuyvers and Angeline Haeseldonckx, who currently live in Houthalen in Flanders, were married on 30 January 1943 in Geel, according to a marriage certificate verified by the ESO.
Only eight couples before Cuyvers and Haeseldonckx had reached their 79th wedding anniversary; some even made it up to a few days before their 80th anniversary before passing away. But none in Belgium, until now, had reached this monumental milestone, a representative of the ESO said. Despite 80 years of marriage, neither spouse is 100 years old yet.
Mr. Cuyvers, born in June 1923, will celebrate his 100th birthday this year; Mrs. Haeseldonckx, born in June 1925, will have to wait another two years before joining the centenarians club.
