Germany will soon launch the 'Deutschlandticket,' a public transport pass costing €49 a month, German Transport Minister Volker Wissing announced on Wednesday.
The digital monthly pass, which will be valid throughout the country on buses and regional and local trains, should avoid complicated fare structures.
If everything goes according to plan, it will be sold from April and can be used on public transport from May.
The European Commission has yet to approve the measure. It is examining whether it is compliant with state aid rules.
Germany experimented last year with a €9 monthly ticket for public transport and 52 million were sold.
On Wednesday, Minister Wissing presented the draft law which, among other things, regulates the financial distribution for the public transport pass.
Under this law, the German government will pay €1.5 billion each year, from 2023 to 2025, to the federal states.
