Belgium's Supreme Court is set to decide on Wednesday whether MEP Eva Kaili will remain in custody, Belga News Agency reports. Kaili is in pre-trial detention in Haren Prison under accusation of taking bribes from Qatar, Morocco and Mauritania.

The Council Chamber in Brussels had ruled to keep the former Vice-President of the European Parliament Eva Kaili in pre-trial detention alongside another MEP Marc Tarabella.

An appeal was lodged by Kaili's lawyers on 16 February, with the Court of Cassation set to decide whether she will stay in prison.

Kaili is among four suspects who have been charged with receiving money to lobby on behalf of Qatar, Morocco and Mauritania. These revelations have led to a full-blown political scandal within the European Parliament. MEPs voted to suspend Kaili as one of its Vice-Presidents in December.

The Supreme Court's decision also comes a day after Michel Caine was reinstated as investigating judge on the case, after Marc Tarabella's appeal to have him removed as judge was rejected.
