The Brussels Regional Government will decide on the final plan to upgrade the neighbourhood around the South/Midi railway station in the capital on Thursday.
In September 2022, a provisional plan to upgrade the area around the train station was approved, as the Midi station is the "international gateway to Brussels," but has been neglected for far too long, said State Secretary for Urban Planning Pascal Smet.
Therefore, the Region wants a much-needed metamorphosis of a neighbourhood and addressed some of the pain points with its urban renewal contract "Rondom het Zuidstation" ('Around the South Station').

The plan has four goals: redesigning public spaces, creating a new park in the Rue des Veterinaires, creating more neighbourhood facilities such as sports centres and laundrettes, and addressing the high levels of poverty and homelessness that mark the neighbourhood.
On Thursday, the final plan will most likely be approved at the council of ministers, confirmed the office of Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort to Bruzz.
