The total budget for investment in five key areas in Brussels for 2023-2024 amounts to €771 million, as an additional €279 million was added this week.
For the coming year, the initiatives programme by Beliris, the federal building expert for Brussels which ensures the implementation of projects for the development of the region as a national and international capital, will foresee €279 million in additional investments.
With transfers from previous years, the budget amounts to €771 million, Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort and the Federal Minister in charge of Beliris, Karine Lalieux, reported on Friday, after Act 15, Beliris' 2023-2024 programme of initiatives, was approved.
"Act 15 confirms the Federal Government's ambitions to continue participating actively with the Brussels-Capital Region in the implementation of projects that give Brussels an international appeal," Lalieux said.
"With Beliris as a partner, the Brussels Region can count on the support of a team of professionals to make Brussels an increasingly pleasant region for its inhabitants and a welcoming region for its millions of visitors."
Five key pillars
This year marks Beliris' 30th anniversary, confirming the ongoing ties that unite the governments around a "common project for Brussels, the people of Brussels and all Belgians."
The foreseen budget is divided between five major domains: mobility (which received the largest part of the budget), urban renewal, culture and sport, green and public spaces and infrastructures for the economy and training. Finally, some budget is saved for fixed operating costs.
This will ensure the continuity of ongoing projects, for which some were given additional budget this year such as the extension of metro line 3 to the north of Brussels, the redevelopment of Place Schuman and the development of priority areas such as Biestebroeck and Reyers.

New projects include the construction of an outdoor swimming pool (part of the canal will be converted for this), the renovation of the museums in the Parc du Cinquantenaire for which the "master plan" was unveiled on Thursday this week, and the redevelopment project of Place du Luxembourg.
Beliris will also commission a feasibility study for "the Highlane," a bicycle and pedestrian link between Luxembourg and Schuman stations along the railway line.
"The new annexed act guarantees new housing, new sports facilities and cycle paths, mobility infrastructure and green spaces to provide a better living environment for Brussels residents and visitors," said Vervoort.
