Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever said on Monday in an interview with the Dutch daily, De Volkskrant, that cocaine trafficking at Port Antwerp was taking on proportions that threaten society. “We are not far from the point where politicians can be bought,” De Wever warned.
“The money surrounding the cocaine trade is enormous,” the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) leader explained, comparing Antwerp Port to a sieve where “sharks pass through the holes in the net.”
De Wever is worried that this may have severe consequences. “This affects society as a whole,” he said.“ The influence of this volume of money is not limited to certain circles, but could seep into the political level. I dare say that in Antwerp, we are on the brink of seeing political influence being liable to be bought.”
