Thirty Belgian sites awarded the Blue Flag ecolabel

Thirty Belgian beaches, bathing ponds and marinas were awarded the Blue Flag ecolabel on Wednesday.

The Blue Flag or Pavillon Bleu is an international quality label awarded to beaches, bathing ponds and marinas in various parts of the world. It is based on criteria covering water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and services.

Beaches, for example, need to pass some 27 criteria, including the presence of a first aid station and lifeguards, clean sanitary facilities, educational activities, and accessibility.

Sites in Belgium are evaluated by an external auditor, an independent Belgian jury and an international jury.

The Blue Flag Campaign is owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
