Open VLD's party leader Egbert Lachaert will resign at the end of the summer with the Flemish liberal party currently plummeting in the polls.
Elected to the position in 2020, Lachaert announce his decision to step aside on Wednesday, stating that "to succeed in reforming our party, we must all dare to question ourselves."
The latest polling figures saw them potentially lose six MPs in the Chamber of Representatives while falling to 8.3% in Flanders, a 5% decrease on its 2019 results.
Open VLD has been losing popularity in recent polls in spite of being in government with one of the party's leading figures, Alexander De Croo, serving as the Belgian Prime Minister. De Croo was the Open VLD leader between 2009 and 2012.
The party will now have to choose Lachaert's replacement to lead them into next year's elections, with the party chiefs set to discuss whether to hold a leadership election.
