One chip shop in Belgium is going against the grain by offering a very unusual sauce with its fries: the Choclàtan sauce, allowing chip lovers to have their savoury snack accompanied with... chocolate sauce.
Frydate, an ultra-modern chip shop in Knokke-Heist on the Belgian coast, presented its newest chip sauce last month, called the Choclatàn. It was created together with award-winning chocolatier Dominique Persoone.
After opening the chip shop in May this year, owner Philippe Andries wanted to add something to the menu that could only be found in Frydate, and to bring the classic experience to the next level, he told VRT. This is where Persoone came into the equation. Andries asked him to design a chocolate sauce for fries.
He was shocked by the idea at first, but then got to work to create an original take on the dish. "The first tests were difficult. It took a year and a half to perfect the formula," he said. However, the result, the Choclàtan sauce, is now served at the coastal takeaway restaurant.

The inspiration behind the final sauce is the Mexican national dish mole poblano, which contains 10% Mexican bitter fondant, spicy smoked jalapeño pepper, caramelised onions, coriander and lots of spices.
Food lovers should not, however, expect a warm, runny sauce, but instead a vegetarian version of stew sauce, with stewed greens, coriander and chocolate. While the sauce can only be tasted in Knokke-Heist for now, the company is looking to expand its business to other Flemish cities, including Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp.
