Swedish football legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic is returning to AC Milan, just months after retiring from his football career at the club.

Now 42, the former striker has been appointed Operational Partner with US investment firm RedBird Capital Partners for their full portfolio of sports, media and entertainment investments. This includes a senior advisory role with AC Milan, according to an announcement by RedBird, which recently purchased the club.

In this pivotal position, he will work closely with club owner Gerry Cardinale, and AC Milan’s management team, chaired by Paolo Scaroni and CEO Giorgio Furlani. His responsibilities will include player development and high performance training.

As part of his role with RedBird, Ibrahimovic will have the mandate to “promote AC Milan’s brand and business interests, and support strategically significant projects,” notably the club’s new stadium, according to a statement published on the club’s website.

“For me and my family, this truly is a return home to the esteemed club where I ended my player career and where I now begin my next chapter,” said Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish legend had two stints at AC Milan, in 2010-2012 on loan from Barcelona, and then from 2 January 2020 to 4 June 2023, when he announced the end of his 22-year career.

His football journey saw him play for Malmö, Ajax Amsterdam, Juventus Turin, Inter Milan, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Los Angeles Galaxy and finally, AC Milan.
