Since Fuse's temporary closure in January 2023 and subsequent re-opening in March, the famous Brussels club has received three additional noise complaints from its neighbours.
Following its closure – which was in protest of a decision by Brussels Environment to impose a 95-decibel limit and a closing time of 02:00 – Fuse re-opened in March under a new agreement, whereby it was permitted to maintain its late-night opening hours twice a week on condition that it resolve its noise dispute within two years. The latter likely consists in changing venue.
Despite reaching a compromise in the first case, three new noise complaints have since been lodged. "The problem is coming from the other side this time," Fuse co-founder Thierry Coppens told RTBF. "Last year it was at the front of the building, and now it's at the back. We're looking into it, we'll see if we can add some insulation to resolve the problem."
For Brussels Environment, the situation has only deteriorated since the original complaint in 2023. "The new violations are even more serious than those of a year ago," said spokesperson Pascale Hourman.
Cultural value
Fuse's temporary closure prompted a broader debate about Brussels nightlife and the institutions that populate it. Within months, Fuse and 20 other venues were declared intangible cultural heritage in recognition of their economic, social and cultural significance.
The club's recognised cultural status will impact on how the new complaints are dealt with. "It must be possible in this city to strike a balance between peace and quiet and cultural and recreational life," City Mayor Philippe Close (PS) wrote on social media. "The public authorities have a responsibility to find a lasting solution!"
Fuse is reportedly considering moving venue as a potential solution to the noise complaints in its native quarter Marolles. One location in the running is the 'Palaces' (or quadrilatères) underneath the Gare du Midi. The risk of noise complaints is significantly lower in such a secluded spot and the club has submitted an application detailing plans for the area.
