Smart-ID, a mobile app facilitating digital identification and legal signatures, is launching in Belgium.
The Estonian app is a competitor to Itsme, offering secure access to various everyday banking apps, government services and document management platforms.
Belgium is the fifth European country in which residents can use this app. Smart-ID is already a market leader in several Nordic countries, logging roughly one billion transactions in 2023, three times more than in Belgium.
The parent company, SK ID Solutions, has five million users of the mobile app, compared to seven million for Itsme. Besides authentication, they provide other digital identity services. For example, since 2019, the European Commission has used its ‘timestamping’ service to authenticate documents with a time-stamp, proving the authenticity of a digital document and showing the precise date and time it was created, stored, or signed.
In Belgium, Smart-ID has partnered with local company Trust1team, a provider of identification services for various Belgian and European banks, governments, and healthcare organisations as well as highly secure environments.
