Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has lodged a complaint against a presenter from Waregem 1 radio station who encouraged listeners to "take down" the Prime Minister.

This violent call to action followed news detailing gunfire that injured Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. Unperturbed by security measures, the presenter urged listeners to "try their luck".

"Freedom of speech is sacred, but incitement to violence is punishable", responded De Croo, initiating legal proceedings with Waregem police on Thursday.

Despite this incident, the Prime Minister’s campaign continues smoothly, his office stated.

The radio station issued a statement on its website, stating, "The presenter claimed he meant it as a joke, but it was not perceived that way. He apologises to the listeners and to Waregem1."

The broadcaster continued: "Waregem1 believes he gravely miscalculated the timing and context of his statement, which should never have been made. Therefore, the presenter was immediately suspended."
