A suspect has been arrested during the investigation into the body that was found on a construction site last week in the Brussels municipality of Molenbeek.

The lifeless body of a man discovered by police officers with a bullet in his head was found at around 07:00 on Friday in a square in the vicinity of Rue des Quatre-Vents and Rue Jean-Baptiste Decock to the north of the Quarter Heyvaerts, near one of the 15 so-called "drug hotspots" identified earlier this year.

"We can indeed confirm that in this case, a man in his fifties was placed under arrest for manslaughter by an investigating judge," Yasmina Vanoverschelde of the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office told Belga News Agency.

The incident may have been linked to drug violence, according to reports in several media. However, this has not been confirmed by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The Brussels-Capital Region has been plagued by drug violence in recent months. Earlier this year, several shootings occurred on the region's streets in quick succession, mainly gangs settling scores. This led to growing public concern and feelings of insecurity.
