Customs officials intercepted over one tonne of cocaine at the Port of Antwerp last week.
The seized drugs were hidden in a steel container, according to the Ministry of Finance. They have now been confiscated and will be destroyed. An investigation is underway.
Antwerp Port is a frequent hotspot for substantial drug seizures. In February, for example, officials discovered 949 packages totalling 1.1 tonnes of drugs in a container.
2023 was a record year for Belgian customs, seizing a total of 116 tonnes of cocaine compared to 110 tonnes in 2022, according to the Ministry.
