From October, postal workers will no longer leave paper notices in letterboxes when recipients are absence from home when a parcel is delivered, announced Bpost on Monday.
Customers will now receive notifications by default via the My bpost app or email. This digital alternative to paper notices "comes from the resounding success of the My bpost app, already used by 4.3 million Belgians," explained the postal company.
Last February, Bpost had already announced that this system of notifying recipients in case of absence would be systematically deployed region by region across the country. It now applies to all municipalities.
Exceptions to this new rule occur when the sender is a private individual or when no email address is associated with the delivery, clarified the postal company.
In such cases, a recycled paper notice will still be left in the mailbox. Another exception is made for registered mail, though delivery preferences for these can also be set via the My bpost app.
The application digitally consolidates all parcels, registered mail, and other postal products. It enables users to track the status of deliveries, modify delivery preferences, grant authorisations, and now, receive delivery notices.
According to Bpost, this measure will save 394 tonnes of CO2 and 302 tonnes of paper annually, reducing paper volume by 97%.
