Swedish engineering firm Sweco has won the contract to design one of Europe's largest battery parks which will be built in Belgium, the company confirmed on Monday.

Sweco has been selected by Dutch energy company GIGA Storage to design its "Green Turtle" battery park project, a sprawling facility which will store electricity from wind and solar farms.

The batter park will be based on a 12 hectare site in Dilsen-Stokkem in Limburg, with construction set to begin next summer of 2025 and be completed by 2028.

The completed park will have a power capacity of 700 MW and a storage capacity of 2,800 MWh, enough to power 385,000 households for a year, according to Sweco.

The facility will provide stored renewable energy during periods of low solar and wind energy production, reducing Belgium’s reliance on gas power plants.

As more and more renewable energy sources come on stream, development of energy storage capacity has been cited as pivotal to driving the clean energy transition.

"This is a flagship project for us in Belgium and an important project in realising the energy transition in Europe, where access to large-scale electricity storage plays a vital role. Sweco has been selected as our partner for the integral design because of their solid expertise in battery energy storage systems (BESS)," said Joeri Siborgs, General Manager of GIGA Storage Belgium.

GIGA Storage Belgium develops and deploys large-scale energy storage projects within the Belgian energy network.
