Schaerbeek mayor role is 'non-negotiable', insist PS

The position of Mayor in Schaerbeek for the Socialist Party (PS) and its local leader, Hasan Koyuncu, is "non-negotiable", stated Ahmed Laaouej, PS leader in Brussels, firmly on Wednesday morning on La Première (RTBF).

"The PS is the leading party with ten elected officials. The MR has eight, and Les Engagés have two (MR and Les Engagés ran together)," he observed. "Our leader, Mr Koyuncu, received nearly 4,000 preference votes, far more than the MR leader," he continued. "The mayoralty should rightfully and democratically go to the Socialist Party."

But with which partner? According to Ahmed Laaouej, several options are still on the table: one with the MR and another with the Mayor’s List (affiliated with DéFI). He added that a potential PS-Ecolo-Mayor’s List coalition would be "arithmetically sufficient".

The Socialist leader for Brussels also confirmed an exploratory mission is currently underway with the PTB in Molenbeek. He believes there are "no other options".
