Brussels police seized some 5,318 illegal fireworks during a car inspection in Cureghem, Anderlecht on Saturday.
The fireworks were discovered in a vehicle passing through Cureghem, a neighbourhood in Anderlecht. Three people have been arrested and may face charges, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. The information has been confirmed by the Brussels Midi police zone.
The seizure took place on Saturday morning. During the inspection of a suspicious car, police discovered 5,318 illegal fireworks, which could potentially be resold to third parties in Brussels on New Year's Eve.
These acts constitute illegal and criminal offences as the transport of fireworks must be conducted safely. In addition, all fireworks are banned in Brussels until 3 March 2025. Authorities are also concerned about public nuisances on New Year’s Eve.
The municipality of Anderlecht has come under fire for imposing a pre-emptive 19:00 curfew on all under 16-year-olds in Cureghem on New Year's Eve. The curfew aims to curb disorder on the evening but has been criticised for criminalising minors before they have done anything wrong.
