A car was hit by a train at a level crossing in Geraardsbergen in East Flanders on Tuesday morning. The man driving the car died in the incident, according to local police.

The collision happened at around 10:20 on a level crossing in Bareelstraat in Idegem, a borough of Geraardsbergen. The circumstances are not yet clear, but a car was hit by a train.

Train traffic is interrupted between Ninove and Geraardsbergen. National railway operator SNCB advises travellers between Denderleeuw and Geraardsbergen to travel via Zottegem.

Local police Geraardsbergen/Lierde confirmed that the driver of the car was killed. "The victim was a man, but the circumstances of the collision are still unclear. The car has yet to be removed from underneath the train and the emergency services are at the scene," said spokesperson Karolien De Turck.

Infrabel spokesperson Frédéric Petit said the barriers were closed and the lights were red. It is possible that the driver was blinded by the low-lying sun.
