Six Romanian nationals have been arrested in connection with a break-in at a business site in Mechelen last weekend, according to Rivierenland police.
The break-in occurred on Sunday night at a business site on Antoon Spinoystraat in Mechelen. Four men fled when the alarm was triggered. On Tuesday evening, the police received an ANPR alert for a car with French number plates linked to the break-in.
The vehicle was later spotted on Kruisbaan in Mechelen. “Our officers pursued the car, which was heading towards the E19 via Molenweide and Europalaan. They suspected that a car with British number plates was associated with it. Both vehicles were intercepted and inspected on the B101,” said police spokesperson Dirk Van de Sande.
In the cars were six Romanians aged between 23 and 35. The vehicles contained saws, drills, pliers, gloves, hats, and torches. “They provided an incoherent explanation for their presence in the area. They were taken to the police station and made available to the public prosecutor. The burglary tools and vehicles were seized,” the spokesperson added.
The six men were presented to the investigating judge on Thursday and subsequently detained.
