A strike by maritime and coastal pilots has disrupted shipping traffic in and out of the country on Saturday.

The action is led by the socialist public services union ACOD in protest against government pension plans.

According to the Maritime Services and Coast Agency (MDK), 28 ships are waiting on the North Sea for a pilot to Antwerp, Ghent, and Zeebrugge.

In Zeebrugge and Ghent, two ships in each port are also waiting to depart.

Additionally, 42 ships are operating with either Flemish or Dutch pilots on board.

MDK has stated they are doing everything they can to serve waiting ships as quickly as possible and keep waiting times to a minimum.
