The former minister and mayor of Roeselare, Luc Martens – suspected of fraud and forgery, among other things – has been released on conditions.

Martens was first brought before the examining magistrate on 7 June 2024. In September 2023, it was found that he had borrowed large sums of money from numerous business friends that he was unable to repay. A criminal investigation was then opened.

The former minister was released on bail, with conditions including not committing any criminal offences, the obligation to seek psychological counselling, and to seek counselling for his financial problems. Martens was arrested at the beginning of March for violating these conditions.

Martens appeared again before the council chamber on Tuesday, which decided to release him on conditions.
