The United States will increase the import tax on European beer from 5% to 25%, Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Prévot (Les Engagés) told De Standaard. His cabinet confirmed the news to Belga News Agency.
The increased import tax will impact Belgian beer, according to Prévot. Beer is on the list of 'aluminium derivatives', possibly because beer is often sold in cans in the US.
Prévot called the move from President Donald Trump's administration "totally insulting and counterproductive" and economically "irrational".
While Prévot's cabinet confirmed the news to Belga, it added that it remains to be seen whether everything will go as announced.
