The Italian Finance Minister, Giancarlo Giorgetti, opposes imposing counter-tariffs on products from the United States in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on goods from the European Union.
Speaking at an economic conference near Milan on Saturday, Giorgetti urged calm and caution in response to the US tariffs. “As a government, we must avoid starting a counter-tariff policy that could be damaging to everyone, including us,” Giorgetti stated.
The Italian government, according to Giorgetti, is pursuing “a pragmatic and rational course” by working to de-escalate the situation with the Trump administration.
As announced in Trump’s plans, Italy will be subjected to a general tariff of 20% after 9 April alongside other EU countries. Italy has a significant trade surplus with the US.
